RIP Sir Percival Sniffsalot

I have been putting off posting about my Percy leaving for the
Bridge. He left last month, but I was unable to tell you. Why?
Because Percy was the most unusual rat I have ever known,
and I didn't know quite how to say goodbye. He simply left after
a bad bout of myco made his life too miserable to carry on.

Percy and I met when I saw him in the feeder bin. He was a bit older than
the others and had gone the several rounds with some reptile and
been returned as unpalatable. As a result, he was banged up,
missing a finger, a toe, and had an obviously broken tail with a large bump.
I took him home, slathered antibiotic cream on his remaining swollen fingers
and toes and popped him in a small cage to incubate. He replied by chewing
a hole large enough to escape from in the back, but not going anywhere.
He did show me the hole though and let me know by poking his head through
and sniffing that should he desire, the living arrangements could be changed
at anytime, and he could leave. Quite probably leaving and never returning
through some hole I would find months or even years later in the wall with
drywall dust, several dangling wires and a rat shaped hole chewed through the
outer brick. Yes, Percy was different.

He was covered in very coarse, thick hair that would not quite lay down. When
he sat somewhere, he would shed several of his hairs as proof he had been there.
I've never had a rat with his hair consistancy and he was the second largest
buck I've ever had. Only "Fig" was larger weighing in at 1 1/2 pounds and approx
8 inches. Percy was not quite that large but he was fat and shaped like Emile
in Ratatouille. He ate anything he came across, and he ate all the time. Percy
loved, loved, LUVED his food. He could and often did chew through anything,
cloth, plastic, heavy plastic cages, wire, and metal.

He was also a thief, stealing anything that was not nailed down including my
jewelry. I've always figured if he was in the wild, he would have lived in a city
and been a pick pocket and thief, rising through the ranks until he was boss
of a gang of street thugs rats that would bring him back loot while he sat
around in padded waistcoats, eating and smoking opium. Percy was that kind
of rat.

He didn't like to be held, but he loved to sit by me and get scritched and petted.
He would wag his tail and chitter and boggle while I petted and discussed my
day with him. But there was always something wild about Percy. Two
distinct incidences come to mind. Once when he was running on the couch,
a Harry Potter movie was playing on the TV. When the snake Voldemort slithered
onto the screen making snaky sounds, Percy flipped out running around and
trying to hide. I had to scoop him up and return him to his cage where he panted
and it took awhile for him to calm down.

The second incident occured when I was showering one day,
and Percy was running around on the bathroom vanity investigating
all the goodies a rat can find in a place like that. I popped out of the shower, leaned
down to his eye level and said "Boo Percy". He took one look at me, all his hair on his
body stood on end and he went "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK" as loud as
he could and pooped and took off. Valuing my fingers, I waited until he had calmed
down and come out to me on his own to pick him up and assure him I wasn't a monster.

I always realized that with Percy, he set the terms of our relationship. He was an
excellent communicator and understood human behavior and how to manipulate
it to get what he wanted. He was street smart and tough, but very vulnerable
and I miss him a lot. So do his cagemates, especially Harry Ratter who stills
seems depressed that his big pal is gone.

Percy, I'm sure you are organizing probably the first street gang up at the Bridge
and hopefully you aren't creating too much trouble up there. Don't boss the
little ones around to much and be a good buck. I love you Percy of the
stiff fur and wise eyes.

Rest-In-Peace Rabbie Burns

Rabbie passed away at the vet today before they could perform
exploratory surgery. We had an autopsy done so we could know
what went wrong. He had a blockage of hair that stopped his
digestive track completely.

You left us too soon Rabbie Burns and we all miss you so.
We luv you bad bunny. We are crying now.

Goodbye my little sunshine Morgan

~Morgan LeRat May 2006 to August 2008~

My little Morgan LeRat passed away today.
She had developed ALS like symptoms and had lost
the use of her back legs and had problems swallowing
the last 3 days or so. I had noticed her back legs had
lost gripping power but she could still walk earlier this
month. Morgan was the first little ratlet of Phippa's that
I could pick out of the litter because of her joker's smile and
back markings. I would hold her before she even had her
eyes open and talk to her.
When she was several months old, she was still tiny enough to
squeeze through the bars of her cage and go roaming. She would
visit Rabbie Burns in his hutch and nap on his shelf with him.
She would roam the condo and come home two days later.
Then one day she visited Georgie Sr in his cage and came
home knocked up. But Morgan was the best Mommy, just
like her Mom Phippa.
She gave birth to nine healthy ratlets who all lived to get
into many things. Two of her sons lived behind the bureau
for several months, shredding paper and swiping food,
until they were big enough to not escape from
their homes. They loved adventures like their Mom, Morgan.
Morgan relocated from Hawaii with me to here in New Mewxico
and recovered from major surgery in January.
Within 2 days of her surgery, she was bouncing around the couch
and exploring underneath and all around back into her world
of adventures. Then she slowed down. Her back legs lost
the ability to grad and hold although she could still walk.
Her last days were tough because she couldn't move but
still was sharp as ever and wanting to be with me.
However, when I picked her up it caused her quite a lot
of discomfort it seemed, so I petted her and talked to her
while she rested in her cage. Today I was taking her to
the vet to be helped to the bridge since she couldn't hold
food anymore, but when I went in to get her, she had
passed away beside her daughter Morgana.

I love you and miss you Morgan.

Quark & Rom the Ferengirat Brothers RIP

My Quark & Rom made the long trip from Hawaii
to New Mexico, but unfortunately both have now
passed to the Rainbow Bridge. I miss them so much
since they were the last of my big snuggle boys.
Both boys loved to sit on my lap and snuggle and give
foofs and grooming. They only complained at the occasional
bath. Both boys came to me as rescues as adults of approx
6 months old, so I don't know there exact ages.
My boys are such sweet, gentle souls and I miss them terribly.
Enjoy being reunited at the Bridge my boys and I
will see you again someday little loves. I miss you boys.

2007 in Review.....

The Fluffy Tribe Year in Review is being dedicated to little
Quark Ferengirat who passed away with what I believe was
a stroke. Quark had been battling an inner ear infection that
would appear to clear up after each antibiotic run and then would
come back worse each time. The last day he had lost the use of
his left side and was unable to lift his head and refused all food
and drink I tried to give him, by morning my little fuzzy dude had
passed to the Rainbow Bridge. Quark was the sweetest snuggler
around. He would come out for free range time and would just
sit and snuggle on me most of the time after a brief exploring.
I miss your sweet snuggle Quark. Say hi to effuryone at the
Bridge for me. There are too many of you little ones
recently there from The Tribe right now and I miss every
single one of you and everything you brought to brighten my
life with your fuzzy loves and furriendship. Rom misses
you Quark and Percy wonders where you have gone to.
You've been the happiest rat ever since you were adopted
as a big 6 month old boy with your brother Romulus. I'm glad
you are no longer in pain with your ear problems little one.
I love you Quark, love Mom.

Autumn Losses.....

This last week I had to help my Phippa and her grandson Monty to the bridge.

Montague MadRat, still young and dashing, developed a respiratory infection
that would not respond to antibiotics. On top of this, he also had a large lump
grow on the right side of his face. We were unable to get the lump removed
because Monty simply was not strong enough while fighting the lung infection.
The lump was pushing his jaw out of alignment and Monty could not eat.
Rather than see him starve or be in anymore pain, we helped him to the
Rainbow Bridge.
Wolfie is now alone and misses his two brothers terribly.
He looks for them daily. Both Monty and Georgie JR. were very young
to be gone, but nature has her own ways of dealing with us all and she
called my two boys had to go home to the Bridge.
Wofie weeps for his brothers,
and I'm giving him extra attention so he doesn't pine away or
get to sad and depressed, but I worry I am not enough of
a substitute for the little guy. Like his father, Wolfie only accepts
living with his family and refuses to even consider another rat.
~Montague MadRat October 2006-November 2007~
Rest in Peace Little Handsome Brown Eyes

In addition to Monty's sickness, Phippa also was helped home
to the Rainbow Bridge. Phippa, in fact, left with her grandson.
My darling girl developed a chest cyst, which could have been
removed if not what looked like additional cervical cancer. Phippa was
incredibly vibrant and didn't want to leave us, but her bleeding
had gotten to much and her weight loss left her getting
dangerously thin. Even with her tired eyes she loved to groom
me when I picked her up and chittered on my hand when I held
her.
I miss my Phippa so much.
She picked me from the pet store when
I went in and she was a young (pregnant) girl who played hide-n-seek
with me until I took her home. Phippa has 23 children, 21 lived.
She was the best Mommy ever, cuddling her kits while they nursed
and always taking the best care of them. She loved her girls
even after they grew up and always snuggled with Morgan, her
daughter who stayed with us when the others were adopted.
I miss you Phippa - your bright eyes
and fun spirit, and adventurous little rattiness.

RIP Georgie Jr.

Little Georgie Jr had to be helped to the Rainbow Bridge.
He has always been delicate and in the last 6 months has
fought a respiratory infection that simply would not respond
to medication. We thought he was cleared up when we moved,
that is how he was given the okay to fly, but he lost weight
and relapsed and has continued to get worse. When he started
having episodes of gasping for air and panicking, we helped
him go peacefully. Georgie is the sweetest of boys, always gentle,
always curious, but doing his own thing. The Fluffy Tribe, and 'Beans
and especially his brothers miss him terribly. Wolfie and Monty
look for him daily. He has been laid to rest in our pet cemetery,
being welcomed by Mother Earth under the big pine tree
in the back yard.
